Literacy
An update on developing our reading processes as part of our Improvement Plan:
We have shared the results of the pupils’ questionnaires with them at assembly and talked to them about what we will be doing next to raise the profile of reading at Struthers. We are looking at distributing a list of children’s books to parents to help them when selecting books or visiting libraries or book shops. We have purchased more non-fiction texts for our library and a range of classic and modern classic books. Mr Wilson is creating a ‘Fantasy Reading’ league for some of our reluctant readers. We are also looking at developing our library further by adding a languages reference section with books on French and Scots etc so if you have any books at home that would be suitable we would be delighted to have them. We are continuing our Teachers Reading in Class programme and have included classic texts within this. Our film club will be starting in February as part of our ‘Rights’ afternoon and we will continue to be on the lookout for competitions that will support the pupils love of reading. As part of our curriculum development of literacy and reading in particular we have evaluated our programmes looking at how we can enhance our grammar and comprehension approaches and involve literature circle and reciprocal reading programmes to challenge and support our pupils. Mrs Brearley has developed moderation activities in reading to ensure pupils’ progress is tracked and next steps are identified. Staff recently visited a Primary school to share the good practice they have developed in our North Lanark Active Literacy. We look forwarded to sharing any future activities, events and the impact this is having on our school.
