Struthers Primary is a Gold Level 2 Rights Respecting and Fair Achiever School.

The purpose of our committee is to raise awareness of the rights of the child.   This is an essential component of our school's improvement plan. It puts the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) as one of the main cores of our school's planning, practice, policies and ethos.

The ABCDE of  United Nations Convention of the Rights of a Child
UNIVERSAL  - Rights are for ALL  children
INHERENT –  Rights are there from BIRTH for all children.
INALIENABLE –  Rights CANNOT be taken or given away.
UNCONDITIONAL- Rights are for all children and DO not have to be earned.
INDIVISIBLE –  All rights are EQUALLY  important - NO right is more important than another
All children, everywhere have all the rights.
All adults have a duty to look after all children
Our pupil committee meet regularly.
This year we are focussing on Childrens’ rights across the globe.

We are continuing to support children in Diesploot, Africa and are still collecting our loose change in our JAM tins.
We also continue to support our friends in the Ugandan Orphanag
e.
We are continuing to support our school chaplains project building a school in Haiti.
We support our local foodbank and local charities regularly.
Our  school charter, lunchtime and playground charters  are updated every year.
Each class and committee also design their own charter each year.

We try to link our topics and school displays to the articles of the UNCRC and the 17 sustainable goals..

Representatives from our RRS Pupil committee also inform our pupils of the Articles which relate to our weekly school assembly.
We are continuing to ensure everyone in our school is valued and respected by all,
linking with the UNCRC,  GIRFEC, SHANARRI and our school values.

The RRSA Committee is led by Mrs Boyd and Mr Haniford

Why don't you try  some of  the  challenges?

Our classes have been updating our charters during the second half of our school year. We have enjoyed redesigning our charters.
Each class talked about the design we would like and discussed what articles we would like included.

We also talked about our roles  are to make our classes safe and happy places to be, where we can all feel respected and valued.

We have designed our new school charter and achievement board.

We all have been thinking about the ABCDE of rights. They belong to every child, wherever they are and cannot be taken away. We are relating the articles to our topic work and have been considering how all the articles can be  applied to our topics and what the articles mean to us in our daily lives.
We are very fortunate compared to children in Victorian , Roman times and during the war

Can you Help?

We are collecting new and old used stamps for the Bone Cancer Research Trust.
Primary bone cancer can occur at any age, but affects mostly children, teenagers, young adults and the elderly. On average 12 people every week are diagnosed across the UK and Ireland. The survival rate for this disease is just over 50% and this has not changed in the last 25 years. With your help we can work towards changing this, so more people have a chance to live!

Primary 4 had a very informative visit to the South Ayrshire
Food bank.
We helped sort out donated food and pack boxes to go to those in need
Article 24

Every child has the right to good food, clean water, health care and a clean environment

We also wore Purple and collected £287.55 for the Ayrshire Hospice on the same day

We took part in a walk to Haiti when we along with our cluster schools raised money to build a school in Haiti. Children, everywhere have a right to be educated.

We love to help children who are not as fortunate as us.

Mr Woods and Mr Montgomery, our school chaplains, visited the school we are helping to build and fund in Haiti.  Mr Woods showed us photographs and told us all about  their time there and the progress that is being made.  Children will be in the school later this year.
Our Fairtrade ambassadors wrote to Parliament to try to ensure that Fairtrade will always be a priority.
We earned our Outright 2018 certificate.
We took part in the clean air test and are delighted we are in a low risk zone.  P3 studied Paddington and how he was a refugee who came over to London to be safe and cared for.
P7s found Malala's story an inspiration and gave them lots of insight into the plight of others and how we can help.

We learned all about the 17 Sustainable goals and thought about what we could do to help achieve them. We turned our ideas into lovely paper chains.
